Argon (Ar)

Argon has the symbol Ar and atomic number 18.

 

It is found in gaseous form and makes up 0.94% of the Earth’s atmosphere.

 

It is extracted from the atmosphere through fractionation, a process that also produces nitrogen, oxygen, neon, krypton, and xenon.

 

It is the most used noble gas.

  • To preserve the wine, to prevent oxidation and to extend the quality of the products
  • To fill incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, to create a blue light in neon lamps
  • Mixed with hydrogen, as a protective atmosphere for the heat treatment of certain metals, especially those that are susceptible to nitriding when treated in a nitrogen-based atmosphere
